Gargoyle Valley
Sawback Range - Alberta - Canada
Banff National Park

The alpine bowl to the north of Cory Pass is named Gargoyle Valley and has avalanche paths overlapping you in every direction, making for great skiing but overall a risky area. Most of the runs here are steep but have good run outs for those looking to ski fast. Other than a small forested spot under the Louis Chutes and a small thinly forested bump in the middle of Gargoyle Valley, there are no good areas to wait out an avalanche cycle. If you head into the area just before a natural avalanche cycle you will most likely be stuck there until you can ski out over debris.

Park at Norquay Ski Resort and travel past all the chair lifts. At Mystic Chair there is a cross country trail below the ski run, follow it for 2km until turning west onto Forty Mile Creek Trail. After 4km of flat and usually fast skinning you will arrive at the Edith Pass Trail turn off. Follow Edith Pass Trail aabout 500m south before breaking off to the south-west heading up a drainage within the forest. Keeping Mount Louis in sight to climber's right climb just over 1km and 400m before arriving at the base of Gargoyle Valley. From here you will be exposed from avalanche and rock fall danger until getting to camp. Travel up and through a pillow field and stay climber's right to find a grouping of trees off Mount Louis' south-east aspect. The largest group of trees will have a noticable horazontal open area near the bottom and under most conditions this should provide a fairly safe camping spot if you tuck up and into the thicker trees.
